The chatter in the salon this past week, as will be throughout this next week, is Easter. Easter as we know it in America, has its roots and practices from a variety of traditions. This up-and-coming Sunday will be Easter again, Eastern Orthodox easter, which follows the ancient calendar of the Jewish traditions. But for many, easter denotes the first glimpse and onset of spring: new life, bees buzzing, flowers blooming, birds nesting, and color!
Color. Imagine any place without it. Imagine any place without women. It seems a thought synonymous!
Mount Athos, a place in Greece, is commonly referred to as the "Holy Mountain," a place inhabited by monks since the 4th century. A place prohibited to the entry for women. There are several stories that claim its original intent to be void of women, but the most common is that it remains a law making it easier to live a life of celibacy for those who have chosen to do so. It is said that monks feel that the presence of women alters the social dynamics of the community and therefore slows their path towards spiritual enlightenment. Enlightenment, being the full comprehension of a situation or an aware awakening, seems a bios view without the fullness of life present.
Women. The keepers of tradition within a vast array of cultures. It is disheartening to imagine that new life as well as the preservation of ancient life could exist without the nurture that women give and maintain to life.
Celebration. No matter how the celebration of Easter has become tradition in your family, it is certain that the women in your life have played the major role in cultivating it. May the new life of this season be a celebration of love for all.
