Good Hair, Bad Hair

What did Cleopatra, Cher, Jennifer Aniston, and Twiggy all have in common? How about Catherine Hepburn, Bernadette Peters, Whoopi Goldberg, and Betty Boop?
                                   Straight Hair vs. Curly Hair!

Women are often defined by their hair. 'She has a redhead personality, the woman with the straight shiny hair, that curly headed woman.' Of course we all know that women with straight hair, long to have a head full of romantic curls that attract every eye when she walks into the room. Just as women with curly hair would kill to have thick straight hair that blows in the wind and appears to look perfect right out of the shower.

Women with either, know there are pros and cons to both. Straight hair, when looked at under a microscope, is round, therefore giving it the greatest possiblitlity to be strong and durable, while curly hair, when closely evaluated is flat, therefore making it more delicate and susceptible to breakage. Straight hair can look limp and oily, while curly hair can look wild and dry. So which one is bad and which one is good? Neither... and both. There is no perfect hair, only fabulous hair solutions.

The good news is that we women can virtually do anything we want with our hair. Just look at Oprah. One day her hair is flowing past her shoulders and blows in the slightest of breezes, and the next she has a head full of curls bobbing around her face!

This is one of those great prerogatives of being a woman. When lye and sulfur based solutions were discovered to be able to break down a carbohydrate bond in the hair, and make it susceptible to take on a new shape, after reforming the carbohydrate bond with a hydrogen peroxide solution, women have enjoyed the changes that having both curly or straightened hair can give, as Chris Rock so humorously reveals in his hilarious film: Good Hair.

Ceramic straightening irons and curling hot irons have given a new freedom to woman wanting only a temporary change without chemicals. When in doubt, a head full of rollers, either tiny ones for curl, or beer cans for a smooth bounce, will enhance a new look without using chemicals or direct heat. And when all else becomes too challenging, wigs have taken on a whole new personality, from something with a funky color like pink or green hair, to an instant change in length or a style you won't have to wake up with the next day.

Whatever your chosen style, color, or hair solution, we thought it would be fun to share a 'Good hair photo, or Bad hair photo with us, and our other readers on Facebook. Then, if 'misery loves company' is your motto, maybe you will find a little company among the collection to make you feel better; or if you believe that 'envy can plant the seeds to inspire others to try a change', then give us your most fabulous Good hair photo and see what comments you.

Who knows, you just might find your next cut or color choice among the photos shared!

Aquage Haircare Products

Here at the salon, we are often testing and switching to different haircare products. But lately we have all agreed on a product our clients love. Aquage.

The reason for it's unanimous popularity is the knowledge that went into the development of the product. Aquage is a family owned company of hairdressers. Sea botanicals without sulfates were the desired product this company was after.

Aquage is formulated with eight different seaweeds and algae substances to deposit numerous vitamins, amino acids, and minerals into the hair shaft during various procedures, and provides a variety of retail products designed to be used at home for the maintenance of beautiful hair.

If this is not enough to get you excited, perhaps the dedication to remain a small family owned company and a partner with Susan Komen for the cure of breast cancer, is. Here in the salon, we just love the fresh clean scent of the Aquage products and feel certain you will too.

Visit www.aquage.com to research an Aquage salon in your area.

Heart Health: For a Beautiful You!

Heart disease, clogged vessels, excess fat around the heart. These obstacles all raise red flags for a healthy heart. Heart attacks have become more common among women in the past two decades due to  the many changes that have taken place in the lives of women:
  • More women have become the bread winners of the family
  • Fast food due to busy lives
  • Less time for physical activities
These contributors to heart attacks were once issues dominated by men, but now women have joined the ranks of poor quality life styles. What on earth will become of the children?

Well, the National Heart Association is suggesting a jump-start on health: National Walking Day!
A day set aside to think about our health and a simple solution to create activity in our busy schedules: Walking.

The change in seasons always bring about a desire for renewal. Now would be a good time to think about Whole Living, and a renewed focus on the food we eat:
  • Food - think color
  • Fitness - think sweat
  • Drink - less alcohol, more water
  • High fiber, low fat
So, on April 7th, join the millions that will take to the street in their brand new sneakers, and start to walk, for their health.
And for goodness sake, indulge in more laughter: it does the heart good!

Beauty Begins at the Market

Radiant skin, gorgeous hair, and a healthy body: ah, who doesn't want that? But if the immune system was not elevated during the winter season, chances are things are not looking too good for spring.

Rather than head to the cosmetic counter to hide winter's telltale signs of depletion, it might be a better idea to run to the 'Green grocer'A stroll through the produce section and a scope of the global harvest: papaya, kiwi, peppers, strawberries, yams, and the earthen smell of onions, garlic, mushrooms, carrots, and beets. A detour through the bulk section bursting with nuts, beans, whole grains, seeds, and dried fruits are bound to arouse a passion for a healthy spring menu; and the list goes on through the crustacean seafood counter and grass fed meat department, being certain not to slight the outstanding selection of teas.

Sound like a perfect setting for a cooking show? How about taking a second look. This Green Grocer is in fact the pharmacy, the cosmetic counter, the vitamin shop, and perhaps the doctor's office!

Science has proven that an anti-inflammatory diet of wholesome foods, is the key secret to health, longevity, anti-aging, anti-disease, and a beauty that begins from within yet radiates in all the right places on the outside.

Before heading out to the local beauty salons, spa's, and cosmetic counters to disguise the damages caused by cellular degeneration from eating all the wrong foods, take a serious look in the mirror; what is seen on the surface is a reflection of what is going on underneath.

Make the first attempts for spring and summer beauty at one of the wholesome and organic markets in your town. After the inspiring shopping spree at the market, and some fabulous new recipes have set a new plan in your mind for spring and summer eating; then go ahead and indulge yourself in a mud facial, sea salt and lavender body scrub, and a rejuvenating peppermint and rosemary deep conditioning treatment for those soon to be summer locks: at your favorite salon.

Be proud of real beauty: the kind that first begins from within.

Beautiful Pregnancy

Spring is here and those beautiful pregnant tummies are popping up everywhere. Must be the long cold winter, and the desire for loving warmth.
While the concern for cute cloths and a possible swim suit will be on the minds of most young ladies, the real focus needs to be on: Bones. Pregnancy has a way of wearing down the strength of bones. The extra weight causes the tiny bones in the foot to take on more strain, lower back bones are not receiving as much movement, and the nourishment of mom's bones are going to baby. Focus really needs to be on the bones.
Heidi Klum is a testament to beautiful pregnancy's after four children!
A little effort with the better food choices will accomplish so much more than the prenatal vitamins doctors prescribe, though they are important too.
  • Calcium: broccoli, sardines, canned salmon with bones, dried figs, almonds, and sesame seeds, along with calcium fortified orange juice and soy milk
  • Vitamin D: for calcium absorption, with the sun providing the best source of D, taking 10 minutes a day with skin protection
  • B vitamins: are best taken in the form of nutritional yeast which is naturally fermented to achieve a perfect balance of all the B's and amino acids, though green vegetables, whole grains, and citrus fruits will help, if fermented products cause allergies
  • Potassium: also very important for calcium absorption, and so bananas, bananas, bananas
The second most important gift a pregnant woman can give to her bones is: movement. For this gift, there is no better movement, than in water. The weight and pressure on all the joints is lifted, and for the time of movement in the water, the body feels no pressure.

Love your bones through pregnancy, and allow maternity shops to provide the cloths designed just for your Beautiful Pregnancy!

Fitness Programs for Strong Bones

A deep sigh of 'Ugh' is often heard at the mention of fitness, yet it doesn't have to be such drudgery. Fitness centers are bursting with personal trainers, enjoyable fitness programs, and hours that are bound to suit anyone's schedule.
Two primary concerns are given attention at nearly every fitness center: heart and bones. The good news is that nearly every routine designed for one, usually addresses attention to the other. The key factor in skeletal strength is resistance, while focal attention to cardio heath is simply to move. A weak skeletal structure, and an unhealthy pumping system of blood flow is often the effect of a sedentary life style.
A simple, yet regular workout can be obtained at home with the use of a few inexpensive resistance tools, or an indoor/outdoor water fitness program that is gentle enough for a pregnant woman or those who are aging and fearful of bone impact from other strenuous workouts. Water fitness is also the perfect solution for athletes struggling with one too many injuries. But when the aid of a personal trainer is desired for structure and accountability, a fitness center can provide the perfect individual program.

Physical fitness should be the primary goal for people of all ages, but it is only a part of the road to solid health. The phrase 'we are what we eat' is exactly that. It might be the best place to start while beginning a new fitness program.
Spring is a good time for cleaning, which might just as well begin with the body, and a jump-start internal cleansing, something just a simple as the right drink.

The body is most beautiful, when is houses good health.

The Beauty Salon Experience

Ever wonder, who really knows what is going on in your town? Chances are, your beauty salon is buzzing with the hottest tips and information about… everything! When it comes to beauty tips, tranquil spa techniques, seasonal makeup palettes, and glamorous hair creations, beauty salons are the first to divulge on such matters. But, there is so much more that gets discussed in those ‘hot seat’ beauty salon chairs.

Hairdressers hear it all; the best restaurants in town, who is dating whom, politics, family matters, and a whole host of gossip topics that would turn your ears red. It has always been the nature of the business. People enjoy the social exchange in a beauty salon as much as they enjoy the beauty treatments they love to indulge in.

Nothing is more helpful in the escape of your everyday mundane, like a trip to the beauty salon. If relaxation is a priority, a visit to your salon will wash away the cares of the moment. If a fresh coat of nail polish, a change in hair-color, or a complete makeover is needed to lift the spirits and regain a new sense of confidence, the salon is the place to go; but if a little neighborhood gossip and a cup of hot coffee is needed to transport you from the personal drama of the day, there is no place like the beauty salon experience.

Nearly a dozen films, centered on the beauty/barber shop, have gained unprecedented attention, and timeless attraction over the course of thirty-five years. Which one is your favorite?

A current book release divulging juicy gossip and treasured client stories has also hit the market. There is not one client visiting any beauty salon in the country, that doesn’t’ have a story to tell or an experience to treasure about a visit to their beauty salon.

And so, with a hot seat of entertainment, knowledge, and fun waiting just around the corner, why not make today a memorable detour from your daily mundane? Pick up your copy of Confessions of a Hairdresser at Amazon, and you won't have to go far to immerse yourself in a little beauty shop buzz!

Waxing: Like You've Never Had It!

Sunny days and bikini season appears to be sneaking in from around the corner. That means waxing time is here. From the far corners of the world waxing, here in the states, has taken on a whole new profile for the very best in depilation: Brazilian that is!

The conservative American culture would like to believe that waxing is a new concept in personal hygiene and beauty, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Depilation (hair removal) is an ancient practice that first found its roots in the Egyptian, Roman, and Greek cultures. Sugar and water with a touch of lemon for acidity, were boiled until they were the perfect consistency to remove hair from the woman's body.

There is a fabulous film well worth seeing to get you in the right frame of mind to venture out and try a little something new this spring and summer. Caramel is one of those timeless films that centers around the beauty salon in the city of Beirut.

After you get up your feminine nerve to be just a little daring and oh so pretty, a search in your area can be as simple as going on a Google search for Brazilian Waxing. Be certain to ask the receptionist a few very important questions so you can make your best choice.
  • How busy or available is the esthetician that does their waxing, you will want them to be good and therefore busy
  • Ask if the wax is a thicker darker wax than the one used for eyebrows or the same, you do not want the same, it needs to be of higher sugar consistency
  • Do they remove with gauze strips of by pulling the wax by hand, you will want it to be pulled by hand like pulling taffy and not with a gauze
We were inspired by the professionalism and information given to us by Wax Spa in Miami, but  a good salon with a professional reputation will gladly answer your questions and alleviate your concerns. Be bold, try something new, and feel more confident in your bikini this year; though you just might like it so much, you will maintain it throughout the year. Have fun, and good luck. Ouch!

After 40

Over 40 is an interesting time of life. While some are just beginning to think about starting a family, others are nearly finished with PTA. Life in the twenty-first century has many choices; and so the only thing that could hold you back, is you!

In a recent contest through More magazine - Reinvent Yourself - we realize that the sky is the limit as to what we might want to do with our lives: after 40. Many of us in the salon found this to be an inspiring concept, and so we thought we would share it with you.

March is here, which in some parts of the world represents an end to brutally cold weather and the new birth of spring, while in other parts of the world, it can be a relief from the heat of Hades, and the onset of cooler air and opened windows. And so, in this month of change, isn't it fitting to take a self evaluation, and determine a few changes you would like to make that will impact the year that lies ahead of you?

Here were some of the topics of change, gathered from clients in the salon:
  • Learn a new language
  • Have a first child
  • End an unhealthy marriage
  • Go to college for the first time
  • Travel to far away places
  • Re-discover a spouse
  • Become friends with their adult child
  • Botox
  • Drop 2 dress sizes
And the list went on!
Challenge  yourself to do some of the things you have only dreamed about. Make a list, and begin to research some of its possibilities within this year's time frame. Do it for you: do it for the next 40!

Strawberry Mask: The First Signs of Spring

This winter has been unusually cold throughout the state of Florida, the state that usually supplies the largest crops of winter strawberries to the US. Winter strawberries? Because it is usually not winter in Florida! This year in the state of Florida, temperatures dipped into the freezing zone many times throughout this winter affecting the strawberry crops; since it was too cold to turn those beautiful buds into ripe juicy berries, they just slept on the bush.

Then, as though a whisper from Mother Nature to say I’m sorry, suddenly the little sleeping plants went from their usual 15 buds to a whopping 30 or more buds that burst into plump juicy berries over night.

Now what are we going to do with this unusually large crop of strawberries this year, besides eat them? Well, look at that poor undernourished skin, skin that has taken a real beating this winter! It looks dry, and sallow, and in need of a little encouragement that sunny days are just around the corner.

The best way to greet the early days before spring, is with a Strawberry Mask to plump the skin full of vitamin C and the antioxidant properties found in these beautiful little berries.

Get out the summer drink blender, and throw these ingredients in for a whirl:

-        6 or 7 ripe strawberries
-        1 teaspoon raw honey
-        1 tablespoon oat bran

Clean your face and neck well.
Place a hot steamy washcloth on your face for a moment to open your pores.
Smooth the strawberry mask all over your face and neck.
Wait 10 minutes.
Rinse well.

A strawberry glow will lighten cheeks and nourish your dry and weathered skin. Continue the treatment for a few more weeks, and you will be ready for sunny spring days, when they arrive!

Dancing: Great for Fitness!

Fitness, fitness, fitness; how about some fun! Now don’t get me wrong, I love to swim to stay in shape, and for an added measure of body tone I enjoy a fitness center, but after I have been out dancing, I feel muscles in my body I never knew I had.

Dancing? You don’t know how? There are so many forms of dancing that the list would excel the space on this page. The great thing about dance is that all of our body is moving at the same time. Joints are in continuous activity as we move our legs around in all sorts of positions, reach our arms up and out, wiggle our fanny to the rhythm of the music: no matter the type of music.

Dancing provides the best workout, with benefits. What benefits, you ask? Gosh, the list is endless, but lets just look at a few.

-        Posture. Have you ever seen anyone dancing, slouched over? Well, maybe if inebriated. Core strength can be obtained in dancing because our posture is most correct. Our stance is with a straight back, shoulders and chest are proud, and our extended limbs experience both tension and release as we push and pull against a partner. Most of your Latin dances, Ballroom dancing, Jazz dancing, and Swing-dancing fall into this category.
-        Flexibility. It doesn’t take but a few times out on the dance floor to begin to feel more flexibility in your body; even for those who are into weight training, of which often lessens your body’s flexibility. We extend every part of our body while in the movement of dancing.
-        Cardio. There is hardly a dance form that does not engage long extended cardio activity. Square dancing, all Latin dancing, Hip Hop dancing, Ballet, and more. It is not as strenuous on the body as jogging can be on the lower joints, but you will surely get as much of a cardio workout as if you were jogging.
-        Stress relief. One of our largest contributors to poor health is stress. The reason is the strain it places on our adrenal gland. We pump adrenal fluids throughout our body all day long, even while just sitting in a chair and stewing over our bills, and at the end of the day there has been no release for these chemicals to exit from our body. Movement of the body is a great stress release, but to add an extra measure to that release is the music, and the interaction with others: laughing, talking and a change in our breathing.
-        Bones. The greatest enemy to our bones is inactivity. Don’t use it… lose it! That is a key factor in strong bones. Move!
-        Tranquility. One of the greatest antidotes to many of the tensions of our day is tranquility. Social activity gives us the time we need to get out of our own head and personal issues and just connect with others. Touch, conversation, laughter, and non-verbal body communication are all important contributors to centering our mind and bringing tranquility.

An interesting benefit that is obtained in dancing is what it can bring to the many other forms of physical activity you already engage in. Martial arts, figure skating, gymnastics, as well as other sports activities are greatly enhanced when an athlete is more in tune with the rhythm of their body movement.

But if partner dancing is not an option for you, then belly dancing is the perfect choice for you. Don’t squirm about the cloths. In Belly dancing classes you wear the same type of cloths you would wear in a yoga class only you tie a flowing piece of material around your hips. Belly dancing offers the fabulous awareness of isolation movement. You will discover movements you never knew your body was capable of.

And if none of the above has appealed to you yet, I challenge you to take a Samba class! 2016 is just around the corner, and the entire world is going to have to get with the rhythm of the Samba by then anyway, so why not get a head start! If you have any sense of rhythm at all, this challenging and complicated syncopated rhythm will blow you away, and I can promise, you will not feel your legs extended from your hips, the next day.

Folk dancing and Tribal dancing have been a language form since the beginning of time. The unspoken story they tell and the body language involved, are all art forms that can center your body in ways no other exercise can.

Never are we more aware of our body and it’s need to be fit, as when a stranger takes us in their arms, pulls us close, and then begins the nonverbal communication of two body’s moving as one. There is so much more that dancing offers, and I am sure you could offer your own experience to the physical and emotional benefits you have received while dancing.

Get out and dance! Do it for your health!

The Beauty of Makeup!

I never cease to enjoy the many aspects of being a woman. Makeup is one of those prerogatives. Each morning when I go to the mirror, it’s a new day to paint a fresh palette of color on a flawless canvas. Yea right!

How many grunts and groans do we make at the thought of having to do our makeup yet another day? Yet I’ll bet if any one of us were stranded somewhere for an extended period of time without our makeup bag, it would be the thing we would long for the most, well, after food of course.

It’s not that women are not beautiful without it, its just that the look of allure we can create, the confidence we feel when our makeup looks just right, and the attention we get when our face depicts the colors for the mood of the day, is a joy no woman would want to live without.

Think about it. In the animal kingdom, the females are always the ones without color and definition, and yet we women can create magnificent features with just the stroke of a brush. We can change the appearance of our bone structure, glue on butterfly looking eyelashes and dip our lips in the colors of every fruit imaginable. Why not be passionate about it?

Ever notice the number of cosmetic counters in your favorite department store seem to be increasing; as well as the cosmetic shelves in your drug store are never sparse of selections? The cosmetic industry is consistently one of the largest retail selling industries in the world. From Revlon to Channel, women love them all. Even in financially challenging times, we still manage a new lipstick or mascara. Its just part of being a woman!

But, how many of us get stuck using the same color scheme day after day? If there are so many choices, why do we hunker down with the same ole, same ole? Maybe its because we found one way that worked and never bothered to experiment with others. Ever notice women who are using liquid eyeliner the same way they were using it back in the 60’s? Lucky for them it’s back in fashion, though it has been given a few new twists.

You should treat yourself to a new makeup do-over at least four times a year. It’s free! Did you know that all makeup artist’s that work in department stores are not allowed to charge you for doing your makeup since they are not licensed estheticians? That’s not to say that a nice little tip isn’t deserving or appreciated, but since it’s free… treat yourself to some new ideas!

There are a few basic rules to follow when trying to achieve a professional makeup look. If you can remember the order of application and the reason for each, the sky can be the limit as to the colors you choose to use.

-     Always clean and nourish your skin before beginning to apply, this just makes good sense and your skin will always look better under the makeup
-     Cover, erase, or delete any imperfections
-     Smooth on a base color to even out your skin tone
-     Create your contours and bones by shading and blushing
-    Highlight your eyebrows.
-     Now if you look in the mirror, you will see how easy it was to create a fabulous canvas to begin to paint
-     Eyes, simply remember to start out and work in, simple or elaborate, the choice and design is up to you, always finishing with fat lashes
-     Lips are last, liner or not, color or gloss the lips are the final stroke to this beautiful painting

Now see, that wasn’t so difficult. Mix colors, or stay in the same hue, but when you have run dry of ideas and find yourself bored with applying, its time to go off to the makeup artist and try something new.

Being a woman is a joy, and playing with our color palette everyday is what can make being a woman so much more fun!

Great Perm: Beautiful Hair!

Permed hair doesn’t have to mean: curly hair. A perm can simply add volume, thickness, and movement in your hair. A good quality product, a fabulous hairdresser, and good communication are all you need.

Perms, in the past, have gotten a bad rap for looking like someone stuck their finger in an electric socket: dry, brittle, kinky, fried hair. Often times, once a client went home and shampooed their new do, it did, in fact look like all those things.

Then there is often the dilemma of color. If you already color your hair, the perm seems to remove it, and if your hair is of a natural color, the perm seems to change it. It’s no wonder; many women have opted out of having perms. But that doesn’t have to be the case.

A brief chemistry lesson would clear up all the mysteries behind the down falls of permed hair.  Hair is made up of keratin, which is a protein that contains amino acids. The amino acid cystine, makes up the larger proportion of hair’s composition, and is the focus of attention when changing the natural shape of hair from straight to wavy or curly. Some of the compositions found in hair have been incorporated into the chemical makeup of perm solutions. Why?

Hair can only be changed by something already found in its natural composition.  Sulfur, the stinky smell in a perm, is also part of the molecular structure of one of the proteins found in hair, 5.2% in fact, and is in the first solution that smells bad in a perm. This chemical breaks down a bond in hair that makes it pliable to take on a new form.

Then a second solution, the neutralizer, is put on hair to reform the bond and cause it to take its new shape. The primary ingredient found in the nice smelling part of the procedure, is hydrogen. As in, peroxide! No wonder your hair turns colors after a perm. Hydrogen is part of the molecular structure of the protein chain found in hair, and so it makes chemistry sense to use the same composition to process a new shape in your hair. But no one wants to lose his or her beautiful hair color, just to get a perm. And they don’t have to.

Oddly enough, if the hydrogen or neutralizer were never put on the hair after the first stinky solution was rinsed off, your hair would replace its hydrogen bonds all by itself in less than eight hours. Amazing!

So, the great news is that by altering the procedure of perming your hair, you can have a fabulous perm without the frizz and without losing your hair color!

Here is the procedure to ask your hairdresser to do on your next perm.

Set the hair as usual for the perm, carefully considering the size curl you desire. Make sure that none of the rods are too tight. Once the time for the first solution is complete, rinse, rinse and rinse again. Blot the hair of as much water as can be absorbed into the towel.
With hair still wrapped in rollers, apply a little of this solution, mix:
  1-teaspoon blackstrap molasses
1-teaspoon oil, (preferably wheat germ, rosemary, or almond
1-teaspoon conditioner, any low ph will do
  3 tablespoons water

Put this solution on the rollers, and then leave the rollers in for about 6 hours, 8 hours for long hair. You heard me correct. Leave them in. The air will reform the bond naturally in hair, and the results will be with no breakage, no color change, and a texture that never looked better. Shampoo and condition as usual. You may have to take the first appointment of the day and return to be the last appointment; of course you will wear your rollers all day, but you will see for yourself that no other perm will ever work as well as this procedure does.

Your hairdresser and you will have to work out a schedule solution for the both of you, and by all means, expect to pay more for the time devoted to this unique procedure, but it is a promise: you will never go back to perming your hair the old fashion way again. The results always look natural, and your hair remains strong and with no color change. Fine, straight, or lifeless hair can take on new character and look fabulous.
