Valentine's Day: Who Will You Be Loving This Year?
February buzz in every salon is always the same: Valentine’s Day. Stories begin to trickle in about visions of grandeur and how the day will be spent. But, did you know that America has the highest number of single adults in the world? So, who will you be loving this year?
Chocolate hearts began popping up in every candy store and drug store since January. Roses, in colors I never see the rest of the year, are beginning to fill the flower shops. Champagne that didn’t sell for New Year’s Eve is back on the front of the shelf in hopes to arouse your attention once again. And of course, Victoria Secret storefront windows look like a winter wonderland of pink and red garments that are too cold to wear in February. The anxiety begins. Or does it?
In a beauty shop, we encounter every personality type imaginable. Hairdressers quickly begin to access those clients whose, ‘glass half full or glass half empty’ personality types will affect the mood of others on such occasions as this. It is amazing to me, the creativity that people come up with to make Valentine’s Day special: if only for themselves.
Those clients who have rounded up a new beau for February, begin to dream of weekend excursions to a Swiss Chalet in the mountains of Pennsylvania, or a weekend getaway to an island in the Caribbean.
Lovers, who have been together for years, plan a special night out, while babysitters become difficult to round up. Limousine companies are booked in advance by teens that have been pressured into a night of high expectations. On-line dating sites are buzzing with activity, as people scurry to create a love story, if only for that special day, and Hollywood began preparing a Valentine movie, back in July, for those who will prefer to spectate the night on their own.
One very beautiful client told me of her plans for Valentine’s Day. I would like to share it with you.
• Up early, time to indulge in a face masque, and hair conditioning treatment, while soaking in a hot bubble bath, some smooth jazz and a hot cup of jasmine tea
• An hour to follow at the gym for a long stride on the tread mill for the first heart that is important to her: Hers
• A huge bouquet of flowers dropped off personally at the nearby nursing home to be set on the lunch table
• Lunch at the public elementary school in her neighborhood, of which she will bring a huge basket of individually wrapped clusters of pink and red M & M’s for the children in the cafeteria
• A little afternoon work
• A quick stop at the dry cleaners to pick up her favorite winter white wool pants and cashmere sweater
• Reservations at a favorite restaurant with a group of seven of her closest friends
• Dinner, wine, photos and conversation will last long into the night
• Return home with the memories in which she created, for the person she cherishes deeply: Herself
Sometimes we forget how to indulge ourselves in special gifts. But when we take the time to enjoy the things we love most, it is amazing how special we can feel, and how contagious that can be to those around us.
Who knows what gifts will be lavished on this woman throughout her day!
Tell us of your plans for Valentine's Day.
